Protection & Detailing

Do I still need to wax or top up protection if my car has PPF and/or ceramic coating?

Many owners maintain hydrophobic behaviour with occasional toppers or sealants, but traditional wax is optional when PPF or coatings are intact and performing well.

Traditional wax is no longer necessary when you have PPF or a ceramic coating, but occasional maintenance products help keep your protection performing at its best.

What you actually need:

  • If you have PPF only: PPF has its own hydrophobic properties but they are not as strong as ceramic. A spray sealant or PPF-specific maintainer every few months keeps the film looking its best and extends its life.
  • If you have ceramic coating only: The coating maintains itself reasonably well, but using a coating-compatible booster or maintenance spray every 3 to 6 months refreshes the hydrophobic properties and keeps the gloss sharp.
  • If you have both: You are in the best position. The PPF handles physical protection while the ceramic coating keeps everything glossy and easy to clean. Occasional top-ups with a spray-on booster are optional but beneficial.

Why traditional wax is redundant:

Both PPF and ceramic coating create surfaces that repel water and dirt more effectively than wax ever could. Wax breaks down in weeks and requires reapplication to maintain any benefit. A coating or film does the same job, but for years rather than weeks. Applying wax over a ceramic coating or PPF is unnecessary and can actually interfere with the surface properties.

What works well as a top-up:

  • Spray-on ceramic boosters specifically formulated for coated cars
  • PPF maintenance sprays for cars with film
  • pH-neutral wash and dry aid products that enhance the existing surface
  • Gyeon Bathe or similar pH-neutral bath products that reinforce the coating while you wash

The practical routine:

For most owners with proper protection in place, a good wash every couple of weeks using quality products is sufficient. If you notice the water beading diminishing or the car not rinsing as easily as before, a quick top-up product restores that performance.

We will give you a simple maintenance schedule that keeps your protection performing at its best without unnecessary products.
